Gunnedah maize mill mural project delayed by rain, border closure

Rainy weather put the project on hold before the Christmas and New Year break, so the final small silo at the front of the mill is still blank.

The closure of the VIC/NSW border is another problem, too, because Melbourne-based artist Heesco went home over the festive season.

Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society member Owen Hasler said the metal silo was ready for painting, but this might not occur until at least February.

"It has to have an undercoat and top coat put on it and then we're hoping Heesco can return in February once he's finished [with another silo project] in Murrumburrah," Cr Hasler said

"But with the latest COVID issues and border closures, we're not sure how that will happen."

There are two other projects in NSW Heesco is planning on completing, but with borders closed, it's unknown when and what will happen.

"You've got to be frustrated for him but we're happy we got the main image complete," Cr Hasler told ACM.

"It'll detract slightly from the image until we can get it matched up and will reflect the paint in the other silos."

Cr Hasler said the society was happy with the outcome "given the situation", and said there had been plenty of positive responses from locals.

"They're very impressed with the artistry and the works."
