Murray Darling Association appoints Gunnedah councillor John Campbell to leadership board for 2021

Councillor Campbell has been appointed as a member of the Murray Darling Association's (MDA) leadership team for the implementation of the first year of vision 2025 - the MDA's new five-year strategic plan.

He has been a representative since 2018, but has now been elected to fulfill the newly created role of vice president of the Northern Basin.

"It is my intention to continue the work of the MDA not just in my region but throughout the Murray-Darling Basin as a whole," he said.

"We have a very strong board and will follow our Strategic Plan: Vision 2025 in an effort to achieve our goals."

Councillor Campbell joins reappointed national president, councillor David Thurley OAM from Albury City Council, and Alexandrina councillor Melissa Rebbeck, who will represent Basin communities in the south as vice president of the Southern Basin.

His focus will be working with the board and the executive to represent local government and communities at state and federal level in the management of Basin resources by providing information, facilitating discussion and seeking to inform government policy.

The 5-year strategic plan aims to ensure healthy flows and achieve a vibrant and thriving Murray-Darling Basin as well as ensuring the communities that live along the Basin are thriving economically, environmentally and socially.

Last week, a long-running investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption into NSW's management of water in the Basin found that the state's governing legislation over the past decade had a repeated tendency to favour the irrigation industry.
