Youthie's workshops to give young people cultural experiences

Indigenous cultural group Yinarr Maramali will join the Gomeroi culture academy for a day of Indigenous cultural learning this Saturday, to kick off the holiday season.

Tamworth Regional Council volunteer coordinator Veronica Filby said the workshops were the brainchild of young people themselves, through the city's Youth Council.

"We've got a really diverse group of young people on our Youth Council. We have three Indigenous members, a multicultural member from India originally, just a really diverse group of kids," she said.

"They've provided us with the information and provided us with the focus that they want to do and we just help them basically. As a council, and as a community we come in and help them provide what they want to."

Marc Sutherland, the director of Gomeroi culture academy, said the free workshops would run from 2 to 4 on Saturday, November 28.

Children between 12-18 will get an opportunity to learn Gomeroi dancing with the Gomeroi Dance Company and Gomeroi weaving and stories with Yinarr Maramali.

"The more we can listen to the voice of young people and take the direction of young people, the better off we'll be as a community moving forward," he said.

The Youthie is finalising its school holiday program for 2020 in consultation with the Youth Council.

The Tamworth Regional Youth Centre is a purpose-built facility for young people in the community.
