Tamworth Public School visited by Surf Lifesaving NSW for 'beach to bush' program to teach students how to safely swim at coast and waterways

The 'Bush to Beach' presentation from Surf Lifesaving NSW at Tamworth Public School went swimmingly on Friday. Lifeguard Michael Bonnici was on deck for the event.

"We're here to teach [students] key beach safety tips so they can stay safe when visiting the beach or the local waterways this summer," he told the Leader. "They might not know the simple things ... we're all about trying to educate them and trying to prevent any more drownings at the beach."

The lifeguard said it was important for people to pay attention at their favourite inland summer swim spots as well.

"We give safety messages like before you go in the water, look how deep it is, and always swim with an adult, even little things like ... being sun safe are really important out here in the bush," he said.

Mr Bonnici said they have to burst the kids' bubbles when they explain they are not from reality TV show Bondi Rescue, but students enjoy the presentations nonetheless.

"Seeing the smiles on their faces is really positive," he said. "We're here volunteering ... because we love to do it."

The trio has been visiting school across the region this week.
