COUNCIL workers can breathe a sigh of relief as initial investigations reveal damage under the road caused by an unforeseen sinkhole is contained to Holland Street and the parking lane in Wilburtree Street.

Repairs were reportedly underway to the 20-centimetre hole in the road as of Thursday afternoon.
Tamworth Regional Council Operations Manager Michael Hazelwood said the roadway has been made safe but temporary barriers will remain in place until a permanent repair is completed.

He said the hole, which appeared on Wednesday, was created after an underground storm water pipe became dislodged and water spread around it.
"Work on a permanent repair will start as soon as we have the replacement stormwater pipe and other materials needed," he said.
Temporary barriers will remain in place near the intersection of Holland and Wilburtree streets. The damaged road is not impeding nearby residents from access to their property.
Drivers travelling along Wilburtree Street will not be able to turn left onto Holland Street until works are completed.
On Wednesday, Tamworth Regional Council staff expressed concerns the sinkhole may have extended into the travel lane of Wilburtree Street and drivers were warned to steer clear of the area entirely.
