Corey Carpenter banned from shops and pubs, accused of using box cutter in attempted armed robbery in Marsh Street, Armidale

Corey Carpenter was granted conditional release on a long list of conditions by magistrate Mark Richardson

Carpenter, aged 21, appeared in Inverell Local Court and was not required to enter pleas to charges of attempted robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, and destroying or damaging property.

The 21-year-old is accused of an attempted armed hold-up at a store on Marsh Street in Armidale in the early hours of November 11.

As part of his bail conditions, Carpenter has to live at an Armidale address with a court-nominated family member, and must not leave unless in the company of them.

He's banned from entering in shops, pubs or restaurants in Armidale; or taking drugs or drinking alcohol.

He's also prohibited from contacting any Crown witness; and must present himself for random drug and alcohol testing;

As part of the conditions, he had to post $10,000 in surety to secure his release.

Police have been ordered to compile a brief of evidence into the case and serve it on his defence solicitor by the end of the year.

Carpenter's been ordered to return to court in Armidale in January.

Detectives allege the 21-year-old was wielding a box cutter knife when he stormed the business and confronted a staff member about 1.25am on November 11.

It's the police case Carpenter demanded cash and threatened the staff member with the weapon, but ultimately left the store empty-handed.

New England police were alerted and officers arrived and set-up a crime scene at the business, before speaking to witnesses.

Officers then arrested the 21-year-old man in a car stop on Taylor Street in Armidale about 8.30am on the following day.

The accused was taken to Armidale police station and questioned and charged by detectives. He was refused bail by police.
