Gardeners warned as Tamworth weed problem could get worse

That's according to owner of Heemskerks Nursery, Peter Heemskerk.

"There's a lot of weeds at the moment, after the rain," he said.

"There's the sticky weed, a lot of farmer's friends, and there's a heck of a lot of milk thistle and of course we've got the clover burr and clover weed. That's quite vigorous at the moment. The bindii and khaki weed, that will come as the weather gets warmer."

He said weeds have been laying dormant for a year or more. But with rain nearly every weekend, weeds are going to come up "like you wouldn't believe" he said.

"You've got to get onto the weeds now because once the season changes they're going to come up into seed and then you're going to have it a lot worse later in the season, or even next year.

"Once the spring comes, they'll grow overnight. One day you'll see them there and the next day they'll be six inches high."

Best options are either a glyphosate like Roundup, or pulling them up by hand, he said.
