Tamworth Regional Council will write to NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey to have water held for town security

The council wants Ms Pavey to assure them that water which was once lost down the Peel River in transit will be saved to secure the city's water.

Councillor Mark Rodda said it is something people in the region had continuously advocated for.

"I think this makes sense to write to the minister about the issues," he said.

"I hope the government takes notice of it."

Councillor Juanita Wilson said she could not understand why the state government had not taken notice of Tamworth's emergency water situation.

"I don't understand the objectives of the state government, and to try to understand what they are trying to achieve leaves us pondering," she said.

"I don't understand where they are going or the objective they are trying to achieve, because efficiently delivering water to a city on the brink of major disaster doesn't seem to elicit any sense of urgency, lateral thinking or any constructive thinking and unfortunately any common sense."

The councillors said Tamworth was celebrating 15 per cent water supply in Chaffey Dam, even though it was still an incredibly low level.

The new pipeline was officially switched on at the end of June and means no water is lost in transmission on its way to the Calala Water Treatment plant.

The council is more reliant than ever on the new pipeline from Chaffey Dam after a self-reported water allocation breach.

TRC water and waste director Bruce Logan admitted the council had taken "well in-excess" of its yearly allocation at the Scott Road Drift Wells and the matter is currently under investigation by the Natural Resources Access Regulator.

Councillors voted to stop taking water from the wells until there was some clarity on what the investigation might mean for its allocation in the new water year.

There are plans in place to start taking water from Dungowan Dam, but it cannot be taken when the pipeline is switched on.
