VIRGIN Australia has said it will work to pay off outstanding airport debts, but there's no commitment Tamworth will be first in line.

The major airline company went into voluntary administration in April after it was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, leaving a debt upwards of $100,000 at Tamworth Regional Airport in its wake.

The company owes at least $10 million to a spate of regional airports.
A spokesman for Virgin said it remains in close contact with airport partners and suppliers after COVID-19 had a significant impact on the aviation sector.

"We are working to pay outstanding airport security fees incurred prior to voluntary administration and these are now recoverable through the Australia government grant," he said.
"All other outstanding fees are now creditor claims.
"The administrators are in ongoing discussions with airport operators around charges incurred while we are in administration, and we understand payments are being made."
