"When I got back home, I just looked in the mirror and said, 'Why am I still in England?'".
That sobering episode led the Englishman and diesel mechanic - who grew up just outside Wolverhampton in central England - to a job in Port Macquarie.
That led to a job in Tamworth, the captaincy of Tamworth FC and a sublime goal which he will no doubt revisit from time to time over the coming years.
It was scored in a round one clash against South United at a bitterly cold Johnson Field on Saturday - the beautifully struck free kick, taken on the left side of the field some 30 metres out from goal, sailing over the top of Souths keeper Lachlan Smith's outstretched arms.

The 1-0 lead the goal established morphed into a 4-1 full-time result: Tamworth FC off to an ideal start in their quest for a third-straight premiership while Souths were respectable in defeat, in their first-ever Premier Division match.
As a central defender, Price said: "I just take my chances when I can." He added: "Once I got the feel for the ball from a few kicks at the back, I knew it was a sweet enough ball to hit."
Tamworth FC extended their led to 2-1 early in the second half, when the always-dangerous Kurt Barrow put his body on the line to head in a goal from short range.
Tamworth's final two goals were also beauties: left wing Nguyen Nguyen controlled the ball with his left knee and then volleyed it into the net, before centre midfielder Ryan Davidson lobbed the keeper from about 20m out.
Price, now in his fifth season at Tamworth, said: "We've got a few new faces. A couple of young lads stepped up today. Nguyen on the left: I thought he had a brilliant game."
South United coach Justin Pendergast said his "small" side would need to get "more physical".
At a nearby Gipps St field, Moore Creek had a superb Premier Division debut - beating fellow top-flight newcomers Kootingal 4-0. There will be more to come on that match later.
