The state government announced on Tuesday that public transport headed to regional areas could have an increased number of commuters allowed on each train carriage and coaches from July 1.
The regional NSW TrainLink rail fleet will allow up to 34 customers per train carriage, more than double the current limit of 16 people.

Coaches in regional NSW will also be able to increase their passenger count, with up to 22 people per bus compared to a maximum of 12 at the moment.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole announced the relaxation of rules on Tuesday.
Tamworth Regional Council Coordinator of Economic Destination Development Kate Baker said it's a welcome move.
"The long weekend was an indication people want to get out and about, so having trains and coaches with a larger capacity is really important to us because they're a large part of the market," she said.
"It's great to see people out and about again and with school holidays coming up, the timing couldn't be better."
Mr Toole said changes to the passenger count for regional transport comes as the state government activates the next stage of its COVID-safe transport plan.
"The new physical distancing capacities will mean more people will be able to book ahead on our regional rail and coach services and take trips to popular regional destinations for the July school holidays," Mr Toole said.
Additional cleaning measures are in place and Mr Toole said the change in capacity was made based on health advice.
