LOCAL government elections have been officially postponed until September 2021, amid controversy over a delayed schedule.

The Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock confirmed on Friday council elections will be held next year, 12 months after the original date set.
Tamworth locals will head to the polls on September 4, 2021. Current councillors will hold their position for the additional year, making it a five-year term.

Mrs Hancock said the decision to postpone local government elections was made to ensure the safety of everyone involved amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Local government elections are a vital part of the democratic process, ensuring local councils are accountable to their local communities," Mrs Hancock said.
The order to postpone local government elections for a year has now been made official, after months of uncertainty.
The decision to delay elections despite other coronavirus restrictions being lifted has drawn some criticism.
