Former Armidale mayor Douglas Hewitt has been recognised for his service to the communities of both Armidale and Nambucca Heads with inclusion on the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Mr Hewitt, has left Armidale in the 1990s, had three stints as mayor of Armidale City Council, from 1973 to 1974, 1978 to 1979 and 1983 to 1986.
He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Armidale from 1970 to 1995 and president from 1975 to 1976.
Prior to that he was in Apex, and was a life member of Armidale's Apex Club.

Mr Hewitt was also the inaugural chairman of Autumn Lodge Retirement Village, a position he held for a decade, from 1972, and chairman of the Armidale Bicentenary.
His other achievements included being a founding member of the Armidale Building Society, serving as deputy chairman of the Council of the Armidale College of Advanced Education (now UNE), between 1975 and 1984, and being a director on the Armidale and New England District Hospital Board from 1991 to 1993.
Queen's Birthday Honours: Locals named on the 2020 Honours List
Mr Hewitt was among several people connected to Armidale who received honours this year.
Others to receive OAMs were former NERAM art director Caroline Downer, founder of the local Parkinsons support group Diane Trestrail and Aileen MacDonald from Guyra, who has been involved with the business community, Rotary and the Liberal Party.
A Public Service Medal recipient in the honours list is longtime Sandon Public School teacher Lindy Commens.
