The Peel Street park, which is opposite the Tamworth PCYC, will be converted into a picnic spot to complement nearby caravan car parking.
Tamworth Regional Council Manager of Sport and Recreation Paul Kelly said the works have been on the agenda since the new Viaduct Park skate park was completed last year.
"We have always intended to not have two skate parks on Peel Street and instead rejuvenate the old skate park area to allow some picnic tables to be installed so travellers using the long vehicle carpark have somewhere to take a break," he said.

It is also one of Tamworth's only legal graffiti zones.
But Mr Kelly said a structural engineer had shown the existing skate park infrastructure was obsolete.
"The existing half pipe construction does not comply with current standards and is not cost effective to repair, while the other structures need significant repairs and but are being disassembled for use in another location in the region," he said.
TRC currently has no funds to fully embellish the area with a range of seating, picnic shelters, and paths.
It's hoped that in the coming year the areas under the two existing shade sails can be renovated and picnic tables installed, a TRC spokesperson said.
