Tamworth weather: Winter likely to be mild and wet according to Bureau Climate Outlook

But the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts winter, which starts today, will be warmer and wetter than average.

The BoM 7-day forecast predicts the mercury will drop into the low single digits through this week. By Saturday the overnight low is forecast to hit just one degree, with a high chance of frost.

Tuesday will bring the coldest daytime temperatures of the week with clouds driving the daytime temperatures down to just 13 degrees, the Bureau expects.

Gunnedah is likely to endure similar weather, with the Bureau anticipating temperatures to trend down all week to a bottom of two degrees by the weekend.

Residents of Armidale will likely endure sub-zero temperatures on Friday and Saturday.

After years of record-breaking shortfalls of rain, Tamworth has enjoyed above-average rainfall so far in 2020. The city has already measured nearly double the amount of rainfall this year than it received last year.

The Bureau's Climate Outlook Overview, released last Friday, predicts that trend is likely to continue.

Winter is likely to be wetter than average across the country, and Tamworth is rated as likely to exceed its average of 122mm of rain over the three winter months.

"A warmer than average eastern Indian Ocean is currentl the main influence on Australia's climate, increasing the moisture available to weather systems as they sweep across the country," according the Bureau.
