Tamworth COVID-19: no new coronavirus cases in district; MP Adam Marshall calls for more testing in region

NSW Health data shows more than 2300 local residents have now been tested for the virus, but the case count for the Tamworth local government area has remained stable at 13 patients since April 17.

The Hunter New England Health (HNEH) district had not recorded any new cases in the latest 24-hour testing period to 8pm on Tuesday.

A HNEH testing blitz at a drive-through clinic set up at Tamworth hospital has seen a massive increase in the amount of people in the area being swabbed to test for COVID-19.

Popular demand and a need for more widespread testing has caused authorities to extend the clinic for another week, until at least May 15.

A blitz is also underway in Armidale, but Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall is calling for other towns in the region to have increased testing.

"I think it is appropriate we now look at applying the same 'blitz' approach to other areas where testing rates are not high enough, including Glen Innes, Inverell and Moree, in order to rule out transmissions which may be going undetected there," he said.

HNEH has asked anyone with respiratory or cold-like symptoms to book in a test as they try to map the occurrence of COVID-19 in the district.
