Tamworth water supply: restrictions still Level 5 as Chaffey Dam level drops but other towns in the region better off

Water users in the Tamworth area consumed an average of 15.59 megalitres of the precious resource per day over the week.

It's slightly up on the week before, when the average came in at 14.96 megalitres a day.

The city has been on Level 5 water restrictions since September, and the target average daily consumption under these strict regulations is 16.1 megalitres of water.

The town water supply for Tamworth, Chaffey Dam, has dipped to 13.8 per cent capacity according to WaterNSW.

The dam has been hovering around 13 to 14 per cent for months, despite rainfall across the region in the first three months of the year.

Water restrictions won't ease until the dam climbs to 25 per cent, and even then Tamworth will only be scaled back to Level 4.

Moonbi and Kootingal also remain on Level 5 restrictions.

Other towns in the New England North West have had better fortune with dam levels rising and water-saving regulations easing.

Manilla, Barraba and Bendemeer are on permanent water conservation measures (Level P), while Attunga and Nundle are on Level 2 restrictions.

Gunnedah could relax slightly when restrictions dropped from Level 1 to permanent conservation measures on Friday.

Gunnedah council said recent rainfall has improved bore capacity and said there's also been a significant reduction in water demand in the shire.

Wallabadah got a welcome reprieve this week when the Liverpool Plains Shire Council resolved to reduce the town's water restrictions from Level 5 to Level 2 from Wednesday.

Their main water pump station has come back online after storms in late January caused dirty water to flood into the supply.

All other Shire supplies including Quirindi, Blackville, Caroona, Premer, Spring Ridge and Willow Tree remain on permanent water conservation measures.

Uralla is still on Level 5 water restrictions but that could change after a 'do not drink' alert was lifted for the town water supply recently

Armidale and Guyra have Level 5 water restrictions still in place.

Inverell is on the lowest Level P and Tenterfield is on Level 1.

In the Moree Plains Shire council area, Boggabilla and Mungindi are on Level 2 restrictions.

Keepit: 13.8 per cent
