Tamworth COVID-19: Police warn public to remain indoors and social distance as rule-breakers continue

Police have issued a large number of warnings and at least four infringement notices to rule-breakers in the last six days.

Those infringement notices are only issued once people have been given sufficient warning and continue to do the wrong thing, Oxley Police District commander superintendent Kylie Endemi said.

"What we then allege is that they have had a blatant disregard for the warning which has led to the infringement notice being issued," she said.

"Unfortunately we see that people are still not abiding by the restrictions, we also see that there's a misconception about the restrictions just being over the Easter period.

"That's not the case. The message is clear, please stay home unless you have an essential reason to leave."

The upside of social distancing is that police have seen a reduction in crime right across the district.

The majority of people do heed the warnings, superintendent Endemi said.

"But I think at this given point in our pandemic response that we are having to issue that many warnings, there is still a little bit of concerns," she said.
