Tamworth coronavirus: Mayor Col Murray and deputy Phil Betts reduce contact to avoid infection

Tamworth Regional Council mayor Col Murray will take a mayoral minute to the councillors at Tuesday night's meeting.

"[It's] in order to just help protect the staff, help protect any members of the public that come in - just a responsible move following advice from the health leaders and political leaders in our nation," he said.

"Essentially we have two meetings a month because of the activity in the development sector, most of the functions of council could be reasonably and responsibly delivered with one meeting per month."

A number of development applications will now be handled by general manager Paul Bennett to avoid a pile up by holding them back for an extra two weeks.

The reason councillors chose to deal with DA's is to make the process as transparent as possible for the public.

The meetings will be longer as the council tries to continue its normal functions.

As health officials continue to encourage social distancing to lessen the future burden on the healthcare system, Cr Murray and deputy mayor Phil Betts have put plans in place to avoid simultaneous infection.

"What we have chosen to do is the deputy mayor and myself are restricting the time we spend together," Cr Murray said.

"As with a lot of other key staff, council has some strong plans in place to minimise those opportunities for two key people in one area of responsibility to be out of action at the same time."
