Tamworth toilet paper assault: Wayne Ashley Philp in court, charged with assaulting police, Big W employees in Tamworth

Wayne Ashley Philp is being held in custody after he was denied bail in Tamworth Local Court earlier this month.

On Monday, the case returned to court again for plea, where Philp, through his solicitor, pleaded guilty to two charges.

He's admitted to two counts of common assault against two women after he put a choke-hold on one Tamworth woman, and chucking tissue boxes at another.

He has denied allegations he attempted to put an officer in a headlock and grab the firearm of another, when they tried to arrest him.

On Monday, Legal Aid solicitor Edward McMahon formally entered not guilty pleas to two charges each of assaulting police in the execution of their duty; and resisting police.

Magistrate Julie Soars ordered police to compile a brief of evidence into the charges and serve it on the defence before the case returns to court in May.

Philp was refused bail by Ms Soars, who ordered he remain in custody until his next court date in May.

The alleged outburst occurred at Tamworth's Big W store in Tamworth Shoppingworld, before the confrontation with officers near the post office on the morning of March 5.

Philp was tasered before he was eventually arrested. He has been in custody since.

The prosecution had argued against bail because it claimed it was "an unprovoked attack on two people going about their daily lives, in their work".

During a bail application this month, the court heard Philp had a multitude of medical conditions including epilepsy and a mild intellectual disability.

At the time, Ms Soars said she could not be satisfied with "the current level of support" offered by the NDIS to Philp in the community.

"I have to refuse him bail, because of a risk of further offending and danger to the community," she said on March 6.
