The 35-year-old woman was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital with multiple traumatic injuries after Tuesday night's crash.
The Crash Investigation Unit was tasked from Tamworth late on Tuesday night and is investigating the head-on that forced the closure of the New England Highway, near Glen Innes Road.
Officers spent much of the early hours of the morning on Wednesday examining the roads, and the wrecks, as part of their investigation.

The woman was a passenger in a Ford Territory, being driving by a 40-year-old man, that was headed north about 10pm.
The car collided head-on with the southbound BMW, driven by a 54-year-old man.
The woman suffered two broken legs, a fractured wrist and internal bleeding. She was rushed to Armidale hospital in a critical condition.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked from Tamworth and a medical team on board stabilised the woman before she was flown to the Gold Coast. She was reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
Both drivers suffered minor injuries but were taken to Armidale hospital for mandatory testing.
The road reopened on Wednesday morning.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing. No charges have been laid at this stage.
WEDNESDAY 9AM
A specialist medical team have flown the 35-year-old woman to the Gold Coast University Hospital.
After the woman was stabilised at the scene by local paramedics, she was first taken to Armidale Hospital.
It was said the 35-year-old was then further stabilised before being flown direct to the Gold Coast University Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. She multiple traumatic injuries but was in a serious but stable condition
The crash investigation team attended the scene and the highway is now open.

Crash investigators have commenced inquiries following a crash in Armidale yesterday that's left a woman with critical injuries.
A black Ford Territory, driven by a 40-year-old man and carrying a 35-year-old female passenger, was heading north on the New England Highway about 10pm yesterday.
A BMW, driven by a 54-year-old man, was heading south on the same stretch of road when the two cars collided.

The female passenger of the Territory suffered two broken legs, a fractured wrist and internal bleeding. She was taken to Armidale Hospital and is expected to be flown to John Hunter Hospital later today.
Both drivers suffered relatively minor injuries and were taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
The part of the highway where the crash occurred - near Glen Innes road - is open but traffic is affected in both directions.
Inquiries have commenced by officers from the Northern Tablelands Crash Investigation Unit.
