The win in Bingara secured undefeated Gwydir top spot in the Eastern Conference and a home semi-final on Sunday.
Groth does not believe undefeated Gwydir have won the Connolly Cup before, but added: "Don't quote me on that."
"Particularly happy to beat Tamworth," said the South Tamworth and Bush Blues stalwart. "That's a huge effort for Gwydir ... we can be proud of that, but we've obviously got a bit more cricket to come yet."
After winning the toss and batting, Tamworth were dismissed for 102 in the 43rd over. Three Gwydir bowlers - Brendan Reynolds, Caleb McNeill and Stephen Pleffer - took two wickets each. Jack Hamilton (24) top-scored for Tamworth.
Gwydir passed the total in the 26th over, with Gregg Falkenberg (42) and Caleb McNeill leading the way.
As of Sunday night, it was unclear if Tamworth or Armidale had finished second behind Gwydir, as the table had not been updated.
After Armidale beat Glen Innes by 71 runs in Armidale on Sunday, they finished on 15 points - equal with Tamworth, who went into the final round with a superior net run rate to Armidale.
Whoever finished second will travel to Moree for the other semi-final on Sunday. Moree topped the Western Conference after thumping Peel Valley on the weekend.
In the other final-round clash, Gunnedah beat Narrabri by two wickets in Narrabri, to move from third to second spot. Narrabri, who went into the match atop the table, fell to third spot and missed out on the finals after Moree's nine-wicket away win over Peel Valley.
Adam McGurk (75) and Oscar King (50) starred with the bat for Gunnedah as the visitors chased down 175. Troy Sands (2-23) and Braithen Winsor (2-16) had Gunnedah's best figures.
Ty Baker (53) top-scored for Narrabri, while Dylan Smith (3-35) was there best bowler.
Peel Valley were removed for 126 in the 36th over, with Chris Holland (4-26) Moree's main wicket-taker.
Opener Ben Day was 64 not out when Moree passed the total in 14 overs.
