It was Sunderland's first tour with his World Tour team, NTT Pro Cycling, and he spent much of Sunday in the break as they raced towards the Willunga Hill finish.
The 23-year-old said he "slipped" into the breakaway as it raced away from the peloton in McLaren Vale and made its way to the notorious finish on Willunga Hill.
"Yeah it was quite an aggressive start and I was thinking even the breakaway was quite large to start off so I slipped into it, and yeah took it quite easy for most of the day," Sunderland said at the race finish.

Fellow Aussie Richie Porte took the Ochre jersey for the tour in a time of 20:37:08, with Sunderland finishing the tour 63rd overall, just under 11 minutes behind the winner's time.
It was one of two stages where Dylan took off with the break, spending much of the stage ahead of the peloton.
"Dylan, he did a great job today and I'm very happy with that," NTT Pro Cycling team manager Bjarne Riis said after the race on Sunday.
Armidale's Sam Jenner, riding for UniSA-Australia, finished the tour in 94th position, 20 minutes behind Porte's time.
Jenner was seventh in the King of the Mountain classification on 10 points - one point ahead of Sunderland who finished eighth.
