Three chinooks landed at Tamworth Airport before they headed south in the worsening fire crisis.
The helicopters can carry more than 30 people at a time and took off mid-afternoon on Thursday; flying over Currububula and the Liverpool Plains.
Military personnel plan to rescue 800 people by sea from Mallacoota on Friday morning where they are trapped by bushfire blazing across Victoria's Gippsland region.
