Tamworth RFS district coordinator Michael Robinson said local firies fielded numerous calls about the smoke.
"It isn't coming from any fires in the Tamworth district, the smoke has blown over from the coast to north of us," Inspector Robinson said.
"The winds are forcing it across the western parts of the state and people should be aware it could be smokey for a while."
Kootingal-Moonbi Swimming Club only got an hour in to its swimming carnival before it was forced to cancel due to the smoke.
Firefighters will be on their toes over the next couple of days, with bad fire conditions predicted mid-week.
"Temperatures of up to 39 degrees are forecast, there's little rain on the horizon and the winds are steady at 10 to 20 kilometres an hour at that time," Inspector Robinson said.
"The combination of winds, high temperatures and low humidity will all cause fire danger ratings to be elevated in the coming week.
"The RFS website or the Fires Near Me app is the best place for people to stay up to date with the latest info."
