The day-long tournament, hosted by McCarthy Catholic College, pitted students against each other in competition.
More than 70 students from St Nicholas and St Edward's Tamworth, St Michael's Manilla, St Xaviers Gunnedah, St Joseph's Quirindi participated in the competition.
St Joseph's Tamworth won the tournament by eight points from St Nicholas Tamworth, while St Xaviers Gunnedah finished equal-second on the same points.
Event co-ordinator Maureen McNeill said the tournament was one of the most anticipated on the school calendar.
"We do this competition twice a year and the kids really enjoy themselves," Ms McNeill said.
"For us, the kids' enjoyment is what it's all about for us.
"Hopefully, the kids enjoyed the competition and improved their chess skills a little bit as well."

Joint runners up: Peter Lanaja St Joseph's Tamworth and Lucas Sardinha St Xavier's Gunnedah.
Third Place: Archie McCormack St Xaviers Gunnedah.
Most Improved Player on the day: Sean Gander St Xavier's Gunnedah.
Best Checkmate: Seth Visser St Joseph's Tamworth.
Best Games: Sean Gander St Xaviers v Harry Hickey St Nicholas, & Toby Harris St Xaviers v Trang Tran St Nicholas.
