Strong winds and sheeting rain came in from the west and left a mark on the region.
The temperature dropped suddenly by close to 10 degrees as a rolling storm and dust-cloud passed over the city.
Wind gusts were recorded as high as 72km/h at the Tamworth airport at 4pm.
While it seemed heavy in the city, there was only 3mm recorded at the airport by 4pm.
Traffic lights in Tamworth at the Marius and Brisbane street intersection were reportedly out of order for some time following the storm.
Police were directing traffic along Marius Street while the lights were down.

Essential Energy had listed more than 2200 properties were without power in areas of Tamworth including Calala, Loomberah, Westdale and parts of East and North Tamworth.
There were severe thunderstorms warnings for a number of areas in NSW today.
The NSW SES warned phone lines would be busy with heavy storms lashing large parts of the state.
