Yaama, the Artstate Tamworth opening event in Bicentennial Park on Thursday night, paid tribute to Kamilaroi culture and Tamworth's reputation and history as the first city of light.
Directed by Tamworth's Peter Ross, it featured light installations, musicians, dancers and visual arts performances.

There was also a traditional smoking ceremony from Len Waters, and addresses from Arts Minister Don Harwin and Regional Arts NSW chairwoman Julie Briggs.
Artstate 2019 continues, with a feast of visual arts, music, theatre and film on the menu.
The program for Saturday includes the visual art installation Weaving Warrabah at Tamworth town hall all day; the one-man play I Am My Own Wife at 7pm in Tamworth Community Centre; and music by Radical Son at 10.45pm at the same venue.
The speakers program for delegates continues as well today, the theme being "Arts in the age of uncertainty: how the arts address the big issues of our day".
