A former Premier League-winning coach with Oxley Vale Attunga, Tamworth Jockey Club president and current referee mentor, Coates has donated his time to several clubs for more than 15 years.
"To get an award like this is obviously pretty humbling," Coates told the Leader.
"I don't think anyone gets involved in sporting clubs expecting individual awards like this one. When they do come along, it's really pleasing and really humbling."
Coates said his three Premier League title victories with the Mushies were a highlight of his time in local sport.
"We had a really talented group, who all had the drive to succeed," he said.
"It was a lot of fun being able to lead those guys and enjoy the success we did.
"In saying that, I've enjoyed coaching all my sides at OVA, Northies, Kootingal and Hillvue.
"Each team was different but all of them were enjoyable to coach."
Coates said he was honoured to be the first recipient of the newly revamped sports award.
"It's really pleasing to see this award back out there," he said.
"I can't wait to see more worthy people than myself receive the honour in the coming months."
