Gunnedah District Cricket Association secretary James Mack said the new-look fixture would help shorten the season.
"Basically, we wanted to try something a bit different this season and implement more Twenty-20 games," Mack said.
"The first couple of rounds will just be for first grade, but then after Christmas, we will have both first and second grade playing the games at the same ground, on the same day.
"All up, each team in both grades will play six T20 games, in place of three two-day games.
"It means we will have the same amount of games, just in a shorter time frame."
Mack said the association was eager to see how the new concept would play out this season.
"We felt it was probably time to just change things up a bit," he said.
"The beauty of it is most of the games will be played in January, when most people are on holidays.
Hopefully, we can create a good atmosphere and get people along to enjoy the cricket.
"The other positive is it won't interfere with our annual T20 competition.
"That will still go ahead, provided we can secure some sponsors."
