POLICE are investigating claims a patron was "coward punched" at a Gunnedah hotel on the long weekend.

Locals are being urged to help identify a man wanted for questioning in relation to the alleged assault on Friday night.
Police claim the man, pictured in a blue Everlast singlet, assaulted the other person at the Grand Elixxa Hotel in Conadilly Street at about 5.30pm.

Gunnedah police were alerted and have launched an investigation into the matter, which is ongoing.
Officers have described the man wanted for questioning as being Caucasian in appearance, approximately six foot tall with a solid build.
No charges have been laid in relation to the assault, police said on Monday.
