TAMWORTH Regional Council has voted unanimously in favour of opening Scully and Kootingal pools this summer as the drought enters "uncharted territory".

Deputy mayor and Kootingal resident Phil Betts moved the amendment which called on the council to open the village's pool after hearing it was home to the region's biggest swim club; more than 130 kids.
The pool openings came at the expense of the council's drought management plan which authorises water restrictions across the region.

Under its own level five restrictions, the council is advised not to open any public pools.
Councillors Charles Impey, Mark Rodda, Juanita Wilson and Betts emphasised the mental relief the move would offer to the community.
But Glenn Inglis had misgivings about the message it was sending in drought he felt was extremely severe compounded by a bleak outlook.
The pools will be filled likely with bore water which isn't from the drinking supply.
Cr Betts estimated it would take about 8000 litres to fill the Kooty pool.
