A POLICE officer has been charged with the alleged assault of a child while on-duty in Inverell.

It's alleged the New England Police District senior constable assaulted a 14-year-old boy during an arrest on Evans Street two days after Christmas.
An investigation into the incident was launched on Tuesday by the Professional Standards Command.
The officer was served with a future court attendance notice, charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm for the alleged incident on December 27.

He is currently on leave and his duty status is under review.
The police officer is due to appear at Armidale Local Court on Monday, October 14.
