AN ELDERLY man has been granted bail, accused of historical sexual assault in the Tamworth area.

The Kempsey man was arrested after presenting himself to Oxley detectives, who travelled to the Mid North Coast this week.
The 73-year-old is facing one count of sexual assault and committing an act of indecency - a charge in place at the time of the alleged offending.
The charge relates to an investigation into an alleged assault that occurred in the 1980s in the Tamworth area.

The investigation was launched in January this year, after a report was made to Oxley police.
After investigations, the man was questioned by investigators at Kempsey Police Station on Tuesday and charged.
He was granted conditional police bail and has been ordered to front Tamworth Local Court later this month.
Police said investigations were continuing.
