Late on Tuesday, officers were still trying to trace the red Hyundai Elantra that sped off from officers when a chase was abandoned about 1pm.
About 12.40pm, police attempted to stop the Elantra on Robert Street for a random breath test.
The vehicle failed to stop and police initiated a pursuit, also calling for back-up.
The chase continued for a short time through South Tamworth but was terminated by police because of the dangerous driving manner of the vehicle, officers said.
A police spokesperson said inquiries are continuing in relation to the owner of the vehicle and the driver involved.
Anyone with information on the driver or who saw the Elantra after the chase is urged to contact Tamworth police on 6768 2999.

A WOMAN said she narrowly escaped a collision after red car sped down the wrong side of Hillvue Road involved in a police pursuit at South Tamworth.
Yvonne Hogno said she was about to turn right into her driveway at the intersection of Hillvue Road and Wilburtree Street about 1pm when she heard the police siren.
"I heard it and quickly swung to the left, I'm glad I automatically swung to the left because the red car came down the wrong side of the road and flew around the corner onto Wilburtree Street followed by an unmarked police car," she said.
"They were just a blur, it was like a small sedan of some sort.
"I'm lucky to be alive because if I went to swing into my driveway they would have hit me."
Oxley Police District Target Action Group and Highway Patrol Officers are conducting inquiries.
