Tamworth airport recorded a miserly 2 millimetres on Tuesday afternoon.
But the brief dusk downpour gave locals a chance to snap some striking images of the evening sky.
It was Tamworth's first rainfall since July 9 when 8 millimetres was recorded.

While it was a welcome sprinkling of rain, weather bureaus have issued some fairly grim long-term forecasts for the region and the state.
The Bureau of Meteorology's latest three month forecast predicted drier than average conditions for much of NSW and a high likelihood of warmer than average day-time temperatures, while fire seasons have been tipped to be extended in much of the state.
Meanwhile, Weatherzone's short-term forecast for Tamworth doesn't herald much good news in terms of rain.
The best chance of rainfall will come at the start of next week with a 20 per cent chance of a drizzle on Monday and a 60 per cent chance of a downpour on Tuesday.
