Night work on Jewry Street bridge will close one of city's busiest intersections

The section of Peel Street near the Jewry Street intersection, along with both Jewry Street bridges will be affected from Tuesday to Thursday.

Asphalt will be laid along Peel Street, to bring the road surface up the required level for the new traffic lights to be commissioned at the Jewry Street bridge intersection.

Both Jewry St bridges closed to all vehicles. Traffic will be detoured from the roundabout near Tamworth Racecourse along Ebsworth St and Bridge St/Brisbane St.

Peel St, between Bligh Street and Tribe Street, will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

There will also be times when traffic using this section of Peel St may be stopped for short periods of time and the flow of traffic managed by a traffic controller on site.

The two lanes of traffic will be moved to one side of the roadway while asphalt work is done on the opposite side.

Heavy vehicles are encouraged to use alternate routes into Taminda, such as Appleby Lane and Wallamore Rd, Scott Rd and Bridge St/Brisbane St

The two Jewry Street Bridges and the Jewry Street precinct will be open to emergency vehicles at all times.

Both bridges and the adjoining Peel Street intersection will be closed from 7.30pm to 5.30am from Tuesday, July 16 to Thursday, July 18.

Tamworth Regional Council said the roads will be close to all traffic for the entire shift, with the exception of heavy vehicles, which will be able to move through the job site along Peel Street under traffic control.

Detours will be in place detours along along O'Connell Street and Marius Street, while those looking to get to the other side of town will be forced to use Bridge Street.

The second Jewry Street bridge was recently opened to help easy the notorious bottleneck.

Further work is being done on the intersection to add traffic lights.

Tamworth Regional Council's traffic data pin pointed the area as the most congested spot in the city.
