New England drivers are being urged to drive safely on the roads this June long weekend, with New England police to be out in force to ensure drivers are doing the right thing.

Double demerits began at midnight on Thursday and will be in force until midnight Monday.
Police across the state will be targeting all speeding, seat belt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences during this period. Drivers caught using their phones during a double demerit period can expect to be hit with the fine as well as up to 10 demerits.

New England Police District Inspector Cheryl Day said police are urging all motorists to drive safely in an effort to reduce the road toll.
"In the lead-up to the long weekend, our focus is going to be traffic related," she said.
"Police will be out in force with the intent of reducing the road toll.
"We encourage everyone to drive safely, abide by the road rules and prevent drink and drug driving."
