Previously, the event was going to be limited to the Oxley school community, but people are now welcome to roll up and register on the day.
The high school's student leadership groups took up the baton recently to run the annual Cancer Council fundraiser in town after it was revealed there'd be no community edition in 2019.
The students have been busy organising the June 1 relay which will be held at the Oxley school grounds and there has been a surge of interest on campus.
"We've got all three [leadership] councils, we've got basically everybody from that," sports council representative Mitchell McCormack said.
"That's 75 people, we've got those as well as their families and all of year 12 and their families as well."
The school hoped to raise $5000 through its relay.
Tamworth Cancer Council community relations coordinator Katherine Welsh said the charity was grateful for the school's support.
"Everyone is so enthusiastic, so it is really great to see relay is in good hands," she said.
The 2019 Tamworth Relay for Life was quietly curbed with a raft of staffing changes at the Cancer Council office and perceived pressure to raise funds in dire drought conditions highlighted as main factors.
Donations to the Oxley High School relay are encouraged and can be made online. The relay has raised up to $50,000 in Tamworth in the past.
