A major search is under way for Ben Michie who fled the Glen Innes Correctional Centre before 9am.
The 27-year-old was discovered missing at 8.50am from the low-security prison during a routine count by Corrective Services officers.
Officers are currently searching nearby roads and the wider Glen Innes area for Michie who they say is known to frequent the Hunter Valley, Mid North Coast and western Sydney areas.
He is described as as being of Caucasian appearance, 175cm tall, of medium build with brown hair and blue eyes.

Police have issued a public warning for the public not to approach Michie if he is sighted, but rather contact Triple Zero immediately.
There have been several escapes from the Glen Innes Correctional Centre in recent years including one in January, as well as two in October last year, who were both arrested in a dramatic police chase with police in Armidale.
