High as Mike documentary premiering in Tamworth on Thursday night

High as Mike follows the journey of local man, cycling enthusiast, and brain tumour patient Mike Gallagher, as he travels the nation to explore the "trials and tribulations of patients using and seeking medicinal cannabis."

The movie was made by Tamworth trio Daniel Raffaele, Craig Wilson and Peter Cross, who took plenty of inspiration and information from local advocate Lucy Haslam.

"The movie is an emotional rollercoaster, and the best tool we have at the moment to fight for better access," she said.

"Most people leave the cinema overwhelmed with anger, and incredibly sad at the plight of patients - everybody is affected by it.

"It has a real Tamworth flavour as well - they have done such a good job that is it wasn't such a serious issue it could be a tourism film."

Following the screening a panel discussion will be held that will not only include lawyers, doctors and patients, but also some black market dealers who are treating hundreds of patients illegally.

"We hope they don't get in any trouble, but they are so passionate about it that they have signed up, and are in the movie as well," Mrs Haslam said.

"We estimate the black market is supplying up to one million patients - it is incredible to think that our government is driving that many people to the black market - it's incredibly frustrating."

While Mrs Haslam would like as many Tamworth people as possible to see the movie, she would particularly like to see as many local doctors and medical professionals there as possible.

"Tamworth people have been on the journey with us - they have shared that journey with us so it would be great for them to see it like this," she said.

"It is an amazing, amazing story that is completely organic and very powerful - I am just so proud of what the boys have made."

High as Mike is screening at the Capitol Theatre on Thursday May 30 at 7pm. Tickets are available through Entertainment Venues.
