Tamworth's Peel High crowned Grand Champion of the Schools Exhibit for second year running

The team of eight students and 12 prized Suffolk sheep, under the guidance of Agriculture teacher Ben Bowman was crowned Grand Champion of the Schools Exhibit, after being rewarded for a history making consistency across numerous categories.

"We were the only school to come first or second in every category we entered, and we entered into seven," Mr Bowman said.

"We have had a very tough year here with the drought so it was really pleasing to get those results."

The team won Reserve Champion in both the interbreed Ewe and Ram categories with their prize animals Vicky and Charles, while also taking out the Booralee Perpetual Trophy for showing a group of four Suffolks.

The judge, Gavin Wall, said we had the best prepared sheep on the day across all of the schools," Mr Bowman said.

"We were very happy with that because we have been hand feeding and putting a lot of work in so we could give it a good crack.

"It really shows the commitment the students have shown to do their best."

The students ability to prepare sheep for show was showcased at the recent North West Schools Lamb Competition, where the Peel team put on a workshop for fellow students on show preparation.

Student Lily Christian has been attending the Royal Show for four years and said the drought conditions have had a visible impact on the show.

"It was obvious that almost everyone is struggling," she said.

"There was less exhibitors and a lot less condition in the sheep.

"You could tell where people are from by the condition there sheep was in, which was interesting, but not good."
