A YOUNG driver has been charged after the death of a three-year-old boy in a crash near Tamworth last year.

It was just before 4:30pm on December 16 when a Great Wall ute travelling south on the New England Highway at Moonbi allegedly left the road and struck a tree and a boulder.
The child was in the backseat at the time and died at the scene.
The 24-year-old driver was airlifted to Tamworth Hospital with minor injuries.
Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit immediately investigated the incident and the man was arrested on Tuesday and taken to Tamworth Police Station.

The Oxley Vale man has had his licence suspended and has been given bail to appear in Tamworth Local Court on June 24.
