After just missing the podium on the opening two nights of the Australian Age Swimming Championships in Adelaide, the Tamworth City star won bronze in the boys 17-years 200m breaststroke.
Not noted as a breaststroker, Sharks coach Nicholas Monet said it was a very good swim from the 17-year old, who had placed fifth in the 100m on the opening night of the championships and was fourth in the 100m backstroke on Tuesday night.
"It was a great swim, well-managed - the tempo and stroke count," Monet said.
"He maintained his pace."
He said the fourth swimmer was coming home strong, but Roberts was able to hold him off.
It the club's second medal of the meet and second in breaststroke too after Alex Hayes won bronze in the 13-years girls 200m on the first night.
"We're having a very good carnival," Monet said.
Roberts has the chance of more medals tonight after qualifying for the final of the 200m individual medley.
He also races in the 14-17-years 4x100m medley relay, teaming up with Edward George, Brinez Lantz and Patrick Bolte.
