Curlewis house fire being treated as suspicious

At about midday, RFS crews from Gunnedah and Curlewis were called to the corner of Pike and Pullaming Streets in Curlewis, after a house erupted in flames.

It took crews a couple of hours to bring the fire under control, but unfortunately the house could not be saved. Luckily, no one was home at the time, crews said.

Oxley Detective Acting Inspector Jason Darcy confirmed the fire was being treated as suspicious.

"Oxley detectives are at the scene of the housefire and are making a number of inquiries," Mr Darcy said.

"We can confirm the fire is being treated as suspicious.

"A crime scene is in place and we're appealing for anyone that has information on the fire to speak to investigators."

Liverpool Range RFS' operational officer Mark Denton said the fire's "intensity was significant".

"Given the age of the house and materials of construction used to build it, this would've aided the fires intensity," Mr Denton said.

Mr Denton said locals should check their smoke alarms to ensure they are in good working order.

Investigations are continuing and anyone with information on the fire is urged to contact Oxley police.
