A LANDHOLDER has confronted illegal hunters on his property near Barraba, after he saw them spotlighting in the early hours of the morning.

The trespassers were seen spotlighting on the farm on Avondale Road, south of Barraba, near Woodsreef, about 2.30am on Wednesday.
Police said the landholder heard a pig squealing, like it was "being lugged by dogs".
When the owner approached the offenders, who were in a white Toyota Hilux dual cab utility with two dog boxes on the back, the hunters took off at speed.
Oxley rural crime officers were alerted and are investigating, urging landholders to remain vigilant.

"It is an offence to hunt on private property without permission. Offenders can face significant fines as well as confiscation of hunting gear and their vehicles," a NSW Police Rural Crime Unit spokesperson said.
"The Rural Crime Prevention Team encourages lawful hunters to keep an eye out and to pass on any information that could assist us to weed out those doing the wrong thing."
Anyone who spotted the white utility in the early hours of Wednesday, or who noticed suspicious activity, is urged to contact Oxley police on 6768 2999.
