GLEN INNES native Alex Newsome put in a strong performance during the NSW Waratahs narrow loss to the Sunwolves in Newcastle on Friday night.

Despite a quick start, the Waratahs were quickly reeled-in by the visitors, who claimed their first-ever victory on Australian soil.
The Sunwolves squad, which includes Gunnedah native Ben Gunter, has had little luck in Australia this season, having previously squandered a 16-point half-time lead against the Queensland Reds during their last visit to Australia.

However, the Sunwolves were determined not to let history repeat itself, as Semisi Masirewa helped set up the victory with three tries while Grant Hattingh also crossed.
The Waratahs stayed in touch on the scoreboard thanks to the efforts of veterans such as Kurtley Beale and Michael Hooper who each scored a try.
With the Waratahs regularly finding an answer on the scoreboard, the match came down to the wire as both sides searched for the winning blow.
However, it was the Sunwolves through the accurate conversions of Hayden Parker who held on to secure a 31-29 victory.
