POLICE have confirmed it was two members of a Tamworth family who were killed in Thursday’s horrific car and caravan crash near Walcha.

A 38-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man, who police say was the driver of the Toyota Prado, remain in Tamworth hospital, recovering from their injuries.
They’re both believed to be in a stable condition.
The Leader understands it was the 58-year-old driver’s wife, aged 72, and his 38-year-old son, who suffered critical injuries and died at the crash scene between Walcha and Yarrowitch.

The 38-year-old woman, whom police said was a backseat passenger, suffered serious head injuries. She and the driver were flown to hospital by two Westpac rescue helicopters.
One dog in the four-wheel-drive survived the impact and another died, while a family cat has not been found, police said.
It’s understood the family of four had set off from Tamworth with the caravan and were headed east along the Oxley Highway.
Shortly after 1pm, about 45km out of Walcha, police said the Prado struck an armco railing on the side of the road and slammed into a tree.
Crash Investigation Unit officers from Tamworth spent several hours at the scene on Thursday, examining the wreckage of the Prado and the caravan, as well as the road.
Specialist police from the Forensic Service Group’s imaging unit were also sent to the scene to photograph the site, as investigators try to piece together the moments before the deadly crash.
The crash shut the highway for close to 12 hours before investigators finished examining the scene and cleared the wrecks.
