About 7.30am on New Year’s Eve, police allege an unregistered Holden Barina with stolen Queensland number plates was spotted speeding at Deepwater.
New England highway patrol officers tried to catch the car which they allege hit speeds of up to 155km per hour in a 100 zone.
Police allege the chase spanned 40km along the New England Highway before road spikes were deployed at Tenterfield.
The driver attempted to avoid the spikes and lost control, colliding with the railing.

An 18-year-old Queensland man, who police allege was behind the wheel, was charged with a raft of offences including receiving stolen property, using a vehicle with unauthorised number plates, speeding, police pursuit Skye’s Law, driving recklessly, driving while unlicensed and driving both an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
A 24-year-old woman who police claim was a passenger in the car was charged with an outstanding arrest warrant for aggravated break-and-enter and commit serious indictable offence in company.
The pair have been refused bail.
