Operation Drink Drive 2 saw 4639 drivers randomly breath tested over the weekend with 17 positive results.
It’s just luck that there were no fatalities Highway Patrol Sergeant Mick Buko said.
“We still had 12 people in the district caught not wearing seatbelts,” he said.
“In Tamworth we found four kids in the back of a car with only three seatbelts and we know the risk of dying increases dramatically if you aren’t wearing a seatbelt.
“That’s a real concern.”
But the biggest disappointment for local police was a 20-year-old driver clocked travelling 178 kilometres an hour in a 100 zone in Gowrie on Sunday.

With Melbourne Cup on Tuesday Sergeant Buko warned officers will be out in force.
“We need people to use their brains, if they think they’ve been drinking too much it’s best not to drive at all, have a fun day but have a Plan B,” he said.
